Limited Width, Unlimited Technology — The Right Solution for Shading Large Marine Windows

Navigation windows on modern vessels are becoming larger, with individual panes often exceeding two meters in width. Customers naturally hope that sunshades can use one seamless sheet. In reality, however, the mainstream widths in the global window-film industry are only 1,520 mm and 1,830 mm.

Faced with this constraint, many shipyards and shipowners ask whether a wider single sheet can be made and whether the 2,030 mm “wide-format films” on the market are an option.



01 Why Are 1,520 mm and 1,830 mm the Industry Limit?


The core rollers of mainstream window-film equipment worldwide—including coating machines, magnetron-sputtering coaters and slitters—are designed to imperial standards:


• 60 inches (1,524 mm; standardized by the industry as 1,520 mm)

• 72 inches (1,829 mm; standardized by the industry as 1,830 mm)


When roller width exceeds 72 inches, tension control during production becomes dramatically more difficult, directly causing:


• Stretching and deformation of the PET substrate

• Peeling or uneven thickness of the magnetron-sputtered coating

• Uneven adhesive coating



02 What Is Wrong with So-Called 2,030 mm Wide Film?


Films advertised as 2,030 mm or even wider do exist, but they carry serious process risks:


1. They are not original machine-produced rolls. With no equipment for mass-producing a full sheet at this width, the products are manually joined and cut afterward, compromising substrate integrity.

2. Material compatibility is inherently inadequate. The adhesive layer and PET substrate are designed for narrower production. Forced widening can make the film too soft, reduce support and create uneven adhesion or local delamination.

3. Thermal-insulation performance deteriorates. Joining or cutting damages the integrity of the magnetron-sputtered layer, potentially reducing local heat rejection by 10%–20%.

4. Weather resistance is greatly reduced. Adhesive at the joint is not cured by machine under constant temperature and may yellow or separate after only one to two years in high-salt, humid and UV-intensive marine environments.


These risks are unacceptable for vessels, where long maintenance-free service is required.



03 Professional Joining: Not a Compromise, but a Better Solution


1. Standardized raw materials: original 1,520 mm/1,830 mm film meeting national standards, produced through an automated and traceable process;

2. Marine-grade bonding: joints use weather-resistant adhesive with the same service life, delivering full-sheet bonding strength and preventing delamination and yellowing;

3. Nearly invisible appearance: precision seam alignment keeps the joint almost invisible under normal viewing conditions while preserving aesthetics and the driver's field of view.



04 Project Example


A high-performance 1,520 mm standard-width magnetron-sputtered film is used as the substrate, ensuring that heat rejection, visible-light transmission and adhesive weather resistance meet classification-society requirements.



Visual result: the seam is almost imperceptible from the normal driving position

Performance: heat rejection and light transmission match full-sheet standards, with no local deterioration
